Examples Of Songs Used In TV Part 1 - The O.C.

This is the first of several posts where I'll be analyzing scenes from popular tv shows and discussing how music is used to support each scene.

As I stated in my last post, songs that are used in television shows and films are used to enhance plotlines.  To really understand how music is used, and why it's used, you need to study and dissect how songs that are licensed fit within the context of the scene the song is used in.  Start listening closely to songs you hear in tv shows and films.  Listen to the lyrics (it it's a vocal song) and notice how the lyrics relate to the dialog that's taking place during the scene. Doing this will both help you understand better how supervisors think when they place music and will also give you a much clearer sense of the types of songs that are generally licensed.

Here's a clip from the season premiere of the fourth season of "The OC".  During this scene the character Ryan is mourning the death of his ex-friend and lover, Marissa. The songs that's used during this scene is "Running Up That Hill", a Kate Bush song covered by the band Placebo.  As you watch the scene, notice how the lyrics and mood of the song perfectly support what's taking place with the story that's unfolding.  The character Ryan is clearly in denial about the loss of Marissa and is acting as if he's ok, although he's clearly not.

The lyrics to the song are below the video.  Watch the scene and then read the lyrics to see how it all perfectly fits together.

Running Up That Hill
It doesn't hurt me.

You wanna feel how it feels?
You wanna know, know that it doesn't hurt me?
You wanna hear about the deal I'm making?
You be running up that hill
You and me be running up that hill

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building.
If I only could, oh...

You don't wanna hurt me,
But see how deep the bullet lies.
Unaware that I'm tearing you asunder.
There's a thunder in our hearts, baby.
So much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don't we?

You, be running up that hill
You and me, be running up that hill
You and me won't be unhappy.

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building,
If I only could, oh...

C'mon, baby, c'mon, c'mon, darling,
Let me steal this moment from you now.
C'mon, angel, c'mon, c'mon, darling,
Let's exchange the experience, oh...'

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems [x2]

'If I only could, be running up that hill.' [x7]
