Don't Stop Dreaming

Posted by Aaron Davison on Tuesday, September 9, 2014, In : August 2014

Today’s post is a guest post from my producer, Gary Gray.  Gary and I have created two courses together so far, one on music production and another on mastering.  Be sure to check those out if you haven’t already.

At the end of Gary’s post he shares a link to a video.  I don’t want to give away the video, but you really should check it out!  Don’t worry he’s not going to try and sell you anything, it’s just a really cool video related to a project he’s working on.  It feature...

Exploring The Issue Of Copyrights And Publishing

Posted by Aaron Davison on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, In : August 2014

In my last blog post, “Musicians Have Become Prostitutes”, I shared the story of how I was recently offered an exclusive contract from a publisher who wanted me to transfer my copyright to her, in addition to signing with her library exclusively.  This post resulted in more email responses, blog posts and facebook posts than perhaps any of my previous posts.  So I wanted to explore this topic a little further to both clarify some confusion surrounding this issue and to re-iterate why reta...

Posted by Aaron Davison on Friday, August 29, 2014, In : August 2014

I was recently offered an exclusive deal from a publisher who stated that my chances of my music being placed with her would be “about as good as it gets” due to her connections and being the sole music supplier to a production company that produces about a dozen reality TV shows.  I’m not particularly excited about reality television or my music being used in it, but I came really close to signing with her, because like everyone else I need to make money with my music.  I consider myse...

Do you feel frustrated with where you are as a musician? Do you feel like your dreams of making it as a musician are passing you by? Do you feel like no matter how hard you try you don’t get to where you want to be?

I know what it’s like to struggle as a musician and feel like the success you’re after is eluding you, always just out of reach. I used to go through periods of feeling despondent after years of not getting the success I thought I rightfully deserved.

There’s a zen prov...

What To Look For When Signing With Publishers And Libraries

Posted by Aaron Davison on Monday, August 4, 2014, In : August 2014

Whenever I sign with a new publishing company or library, I look for two main things in order to determine whether or not I ultimately sign with them. All publishers and libraries are certainly not created equal, so be sure to ask yourself the following questions before signing with a new company:

1)    What is their track record? In general I’m looking for companies that are established and have a long history of placing music.  There are a lot of music licensing companies out there.  Som...

Collecting Royalties For Live Performances

Posted by Aaron Davison on Sunday, August 3, 2014, In : August 2014

Did you know that you can collect performance royalties for playing your own original music live? Well, you can and I have a feeling there are still a lot of musicians not aware of this relatively new revenue stream.  In the US, whether you are with ASCAP, BMI or SESAC, you can collect royalties every time you perform your own music in a live venue. Socan in Canada also has a similar program.  If you’re outside of the US and Canada, check with your local PRO to see if they offer this servic...
